Implement Cart Promotions

A promotion gives customers an incentive to buy more products. The Cleverbridge platform offers cart promotion, a quick and easy way to set up a promotion that is applicable to the cart. Cart promotion is a simple and flexible way to give your customers a discount, either a specified percentage or amount of money off of the total cart value.

It differs from the item level promotion, because the cart promotion is not bound to specific products but to the total value of the cart, regardless of which products your customers add to the cart.

Read through the following use cases to understand how to incentivize your customers to buy more by setting up the cart promotion.

Note

The Cart Promotion feature is the newest addition to the Cleverbridge platform. This feature is currently in its beta version.

If you want to set up a promotion for just one product or selected products (item level promotion), see Add a Promotion.

Settings Overview

When you set up the cart promotion, you define the following factors:

  • Discount type (percentage or absolute discount pricing method).
  • A minimum number of product items in the cart to trigger the promotion. For example, apply the discount only when the cart contains a minimum of 3 product items.
  • Optional volume scale discount, which means different discount tiers depending on the number of product licenses in the cart.
  • Subscription intervals for which the discount applies. For example, apply the discount only to the initial purchaseClosed An order made by a customer and the records associated with it. or include more billing intervals in the discount.

When you set up the cart promotion, you create coupon codes that enable your customers to use the discount.

If you apply price scales (also known as volume pricing method) on the level of your product settings, this pricing shows up as usual in the checkout and is a part of the subtotal cart value. Then, the cart promotion is calculated based on the subtotal value, and the final price appears as the total value.

Limitations

Cart promotion is limited by the following conditions:

Note

All subscription products in the cart need to be of the same billing interval, for example all items are billed every 6 months. If your customer’s cart contains subscription products of unequal billing intervals, for example, 6-month and 12-month products, the promotion will not take effect. Perpetual products can be mixed with subscription products in one cart, and the cart promotion applies.

Use Case: Cart Promotion with Absolute Discount

You want to offer your customers a discount of 20 EUR during Cyber Week. The promotion applies to all the products in your account and you do not want to combine it with any other promotion. As a result, your customers get 20 EUR off from the price in the cart, no matter what products they buy or how many products they buy, as long as all the subscription products in the cart share the same billing interval.

Cart Promotion with Volume Scale Discount

Cart promotion offers an option of volume scale discount, which means there are different discount tiers depending on the number of product licenses in the cart. In other words, the more licenses your customers buy, the higher the discount.

Set the volume scale discount in the Price Settings section, when you add a cart promotion in the web admin tool.

Note

For the volume scale discount to take effect, the subscription items in the cart need to have the same billing interval.

Use Case: Cart Promotion with Percentage Volume Scale Discount

You want to offer a volume scale discount to your customers with the following license quantity tiers:

  • 5% discount for customers who buy 2 licenses,
  • 10% discount for customers who buy 3 licenses,
  • 15% discount for customers who buy 4 licenses,
  • 20% discount for customers who buy 5 licenses.

The promotion applies to all the products in your account and you do not want to combine it with any other promotion.

In this case, if your customer has two products in the cart - two licenses of product A, and five licenses of product B - then the cart will be discounted 5%, as the minimal item quantity of all items in the cart is taken into account. In this case, the minimal item quantity is two.
If your customer has three products in the cart - four licenses of product A, five licenses of product B, and six licenses of product C - then the cart will be discounted 15%, because in this case, the minimal item quantity of all items in the cart is four.
