Implement cart promotions
A promotion encourages customers to purchase additional products. The Cleverbridge platform provides a cart promotion feature, allowing you to easily set up discounts that apply to the entire cart. This flexible option enables you to offer a discount as a specific percentage or amount off the total cart value.
Unlike item-level promotions, cart promotions apply to the total cart amount rather than individual products, regardless of which items customers add.
Settings overview
When you set up the cart promotion, you define the following factors:
- Discount type (percentage or absolute discount pricing method).
- A minimum number of product items in the cart to trigger the promotion. For example, apply the discount only when the cart contains a minimum of three product items.
- Optional volume scale discount, which means different discount tiers depending on the number of product licenses in the cart.
- Subscription intervals for which the discount applies. For example, apply the discount only to the initial purchase or include more billing intervals in the discount.
When you set up the cart promotion, you create coupon codes that enable your customers to use the discount.
If you apply price scales (also known as a volume pricing method) on the level of your product settings, this pricing shows up as usual in the checkout and is a part of the subtotal cart value. Then, the cart promotion is calculated based on the subtotal value, and the final price appears as the total value.
Limitations
Cart promotion is limited by the following conditions:
- All subscription products in the cart need to share the same billing interval.
- It is not recommended to combine cart level and item level promotions for the same product item.
- If a customer applies a new coupon to a subscription item, the old coupon is overwritten, so the old promotion does not take effect anymore.
- For the volume scale discount to take effect, the subscription products in the cart need to have the same billing interval.
All subscription products in the cart need to be of the same billing interval, for example, all items are billed every 6 months. If your customer’s cart contains subscription products of unequal billing intervals, for example, 6-months and 12-months products, the promotion will not take effect. Perpetual products can be mixed with subscription products in one cart, and the cart promotion applies.
Cart promotion use cases
Check the following use cases to see how you can incentivize your customers to buy more products by setting up cart promotions.
Use case: Cart promotion with absolute discount
You want to offer your customers a discount of 20 EUR during Cyber Week. The promotion applies to all the products in your account and you do not want to combine it with any other promotion. As a result, your customers get 20 EUR off from the price in the cart, no matter what products they buy or how many products they buy, as long as all the subscription products in the cart share the same billing interval.
The applied promotion is visible in the summary: 20 EUR off from the subtotal price.
