Manage selection text

Within our web admin tool, you can set up Selection Text with which you can offer your customers a product in multiple languages in a shopping cart.

The following is an example of such a business case:

Example

Shieldware, Inc. sells products in the European market, including Belgium, a country with three official languages:

  • French
  • Dutch
  • German To cater to this diverse audience, Shieldware offers its cleaner utility software, Soap, in multiple languages. This approach helps increase revenue in multilingual markets like Belgium by allowing customers to choose the language version that suits them best. In this use case, all language versions are priced the same.

To set up different options for a product (including version, language, license period, number of licenses, subscription billing intervals), use our Selection Text feature available in Configure > Selection Text in our web admin tool.

Example

In the following example, customers can select from different language versions of the product. The example shows a customer selecting the French version of the product, which comes with a higher value than the Dutch or German version as the customer only speaks French.

Create Selection Text

Setting up Selection Text involves three main steps:

Set up Selection Text

Define name and position

  1. Go to Configure > Selection Text in our web admin tool.
  2. Click the Add Selection Text button and enter a name for the product variation.
  3. Select a position. The position determines where the product variation is displayed in the cart. Select from the following options:
    • Product Column: When the Use product names toggle is disabled, product variations are shown beneath the product in the Product Name column in the cart. When the toggle is enabled, the variation replaces the product in the cart. For an example, see Use product names under Apply Selection Text.
    • Separate Column: Product variation is displayed in a new column in the cart.
    • Hidden: Product variation is not displayed in the cart.

Set up a product characteristic

Select or add a product characteristic for the product variation.

  1. Click the Select Characteristic button.
  2. Select one or more product characteristics for use in this product variation.
  3. Click OK.

In the Preview section to the right, you can see the selected product characteristic as it will display in the checkout process or shopping cart.

  1. Click the + Add Characteristic button.

  2. Enter a name of the product characteristic.

  3. In the Control Type field, select whether the product characteristic options should display as a drop-down list or as radio buttons in the cart.

  4. In the Characteristic Display Text field, select a text element to display as a header in the checkout process or shopping cart when the product variation is a separate column.

  5. (Optional) If you want to add a new text element, click + Add Display Text at the bottom of the drop-down list. Add Display Text

    Important

Beware that whenever you input a display text that has not been added before, you have to actively click + Add Display Text, or else it will not be saved and you have to input it again.

  6. Add options to the product characteristic. a. Click the + Add Characteristic button. b. In the Option Name field, enter an internal name for the option. c. In the Option Display Text field, select a text element to display for the option in the cart. d. (Optional) If you want to add a new text element, click + Add Display Text at the bottom of the drop-down list. e. Repeat the steps a-d to add as many options as needed. f. Order the options by dragging and dropping them. This determines the order in which they display in the cart.

  7. Click Submit.

Apply Selection Text

Every product characteristic option in the hierarchy must have one product assigned to it.

  1. In the product characteristics hierarchy on the left, click the Assign Product button next to a product characteristic option.
  2. Select a product and click OK.
  3. (Optional) To override the default text element that was selected for this product characteristic option, click the Edit icon next to the product characteristic option and select a text element.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for the remaining product characteristic options in the hierarchy.

If the Product Column position is selected, the Use product names toggle is available for enabling. This setting overrides the text elements that were selected for the product variation and displays the names of the product assigned to the product characteristic.

Example

In the following example, Use product names has not been enabled. The product variation displays below the product, with the text elements that were selected for the product variation.

Use product names - not selected - example

In the following example, Use product names has been enabled. The product names override the text elements, and the product variation replaces the product in the cart.

note

It is recommended that you add settings under the Catalog tab in Commerce Assistant (CA). Be aware that it only makes sense to add settings if a Cleverbridge-maintained catalog already exists.

Use the Catalog Settings tab to enter information relevant only when a product variation is used in a catalog.

The following settings are available:

  • Display Name: Name that displays to customers in the shopping cart, confirmation page, email messages, and so on. This field doesn't support HTML.
  • Additional Name Information: Use this option to provide a short, clear, and detailed product description about the essential features of the product. This description displays as an additional line below the product in the shopping cart, review page, confirmation page, email messages, and so on. This field doesn't support HTML.
Due to legal requirements for Cleverbridge as an online reseller, a description of the product's essential features must be shown to customers just before they complete their purchase. This description should be short, clear, and detailed, allowing customers to make an informed decision.
Customers should have a general understanding of how the product works. If the product name is already descriptive, no further action is needed. However, if the product name does not clearly convey its functionality, use the Additional Name Information field to provide the essential features description.
Example

In the following example, the essential features description provides more information about the product:

Essential features description 1

In the following example, the essential features description is not provided, making it unclear to customers what the product is used for:

  • Create SEO URL: Enter keywords to be appended to every URL generated for its category in the catalog. Separate keywords by dashes or periods and do not enter white space in this field.
Example

Examples of keywords are antivirus, security, and removecookie. The URL would look like this: https://www.shieldwareexamplecompany.com/123/catalog/categoryname.antivirusfromshieldware/antivirus.security

  • Meta Title: Search engines use this text in their results listings. It also determines how search engines rank your catalog’s web page in the results listings. The title displays at the very top of the web browser when your catalog is viewed, and when your catalog is bookmarked, this is the name that is saved in the bookmark list.
  • Meta Keywords: Provides text for crawler-based search engines to index and rank meta keywords. Keywords are not seen by customers, because they exist in the header area of the catalog’s web page. You can also enter parameters in this field to control which character set the web browser uses.
note

Not all crawler-based search engines use keywords, and the text found in the body of your catalog’s web page is the most important factor for determining ranking.

  • Meta Description: Text that displays in a search engine’s results list under the title, guiding users’ search behavior.

Insert product images for the product selection.

Use the Catalog Descriptions section to enter descriptions that display for the product variation in the catalog.
