Offer PayPal Standard payments
Overview
PayPal Standard lets a customer authorize a payment with a funding source linked to their PayPal account. The customer leaves the Cleverbridge checkout to authorize in PayPal and returns after PayPal processes the transaction.
The currently documented Cleverbridge capability includes one-time purchases and recurring subscription payments through a customer-approved PayPal Billing Agreement.
This page explains PayPal Standard from the client's perspective. You can share the Pay with PayPal Standard guide with customers who need help completing a payment.
PayPal Standard at a glance
PayPal's official documentation describes payments made with a funding source linked to the customer's account and billing agreements for saved PayPal payment methods. See PayPal standard payments and Save payment methods.
Why offer PayPal Standard
PayPal can help you reach customers who prefer to pay with a funding source linked to their PayPal account. As of March 31, 2025, PayPal reported 436 million active accounts worldwide. See PayPal’s Q1 2025 results and Accept PayPal payments.
Offering PayPal Standard can help you:
- Provide a familiar account-based payment experience to customers who use PayPal.
- Let customers choose an eligible funding source linked to their PayPal account.
- Reduce the need for customers to enter payment credentials directly in the Cleverbridge checkout.
- Support both one-time purchases and recurring subscription payments through the documented PayPal Billing Agreement flow.
- Keep customer login and payment authorization within the PayPal environment.
PayPal is available in more than 200 countries and regions, but its services and supported currencies vary by market. See PayPal worldwide.
Cleverbridge purchase flow
- The customer selects PayPal in the express checkout area.
- Cleverbridge redirects the customer to PayPal.
- The customer logs in and completes the requested identity confirmation.
- The customer selects an available linked bank account, credit card, or debit card and confirms the payment.
- PayPal processes the transaction and returns the customer to the Cleverbridge confirmation page.
- Cleverbridge sends the confirmation email, receipt, and applicable delivery information.
Subscription renewals
For a subscription, the customer approves a PayPal Billing Agreement. The agreement authorizes the recurring subscription payments described in the current Cleverbridge documentation; it does not guarantee that every future payment will succeed.
Customers can manage the automatic payment and its preferred funding source in PayPal. If the customer cancels the automatic payment, future charges under that agreement stop. See PayPal's automatic payment guidance.
